Native to South Asia the use of Ginger dates back to early times in India and China. It was used by the Greeks and Romans. By the 11th century it was well known in England. It made its way to West Indies, Mexico and Spain and now used worldwide.

The root is cultivated after the plant dies back.

Ginger comes from the same family as Cardamom and Turmeric.


Some traditional uses of ginger -

As a peripheral circulatory stimulant - Warms the body.

Anti-emetic-helps with stomach upsets and is great for travel sickness

Anti-inflammatory- Used to help support those with arthritis and rheumatism

Increases warmth and circulation to the pelvic area which may assist with some menstrual issues.

Ways of using ginger at home-

Ginger tea- simmer 4-5 slices of fresh ginger in 1 cup of water, cover and steep for 10-15 minutes. A slice a lemon or some freshly squeezed lemon juice added is a great morning drink to start the day.

Ginger Bath- Freshly grated ginger (a couple of TBSP) can be added to your bath (place inside a muslin cloth or similar) and you can try adding this with Epsom salts, this can be very warming so not for young children or those with medical conditions.

Ginger compress- Make a tea from adding grated ginger ( approx. 1-2 Tablespoons) into a cheese cloth or similar , add the ginger tea bag to the water and let it boil for about ten minutes .With a spoon or with gloves to protect from the heat press out the ginger to release all of the goodness. The ginger water is now ready to use. With a cloth, soak in the water and ring out (careful of the hot water) and apply directly to the area you are wanting to warm. It can be replaced as it cools, use for about 20 minutes in total. Try to have as hot as possible and adding a towel over top of the cloth will help retain the heat for longer. Compress can be placed on kidneys, lungs, joints and areas of muscle ache.

Ginger foot soak- try using this before bed for a good night’s sleep and relaxation. Soak feet for about ten minutes in the ginger water ( as above for the bath) You can use dried ginger instead of fresh if needed, place a couple of tablespoons of fresh ginger in the hot water and soak, a few drops of lavender can be added also……lovely warming and relaxing foot soak.

Ginger is such a lovely, warming herb, it is great in cooking and teas. It is included in a lot of herbal combinations due to its wonderful properties
