Botanical name- Gentiana lutea
Habitat- Indigenous to the mountain regions in Europe
Part used- Dried rhizome and root, usually collected in autumn


How has it been used?
Indigestion and sluggish digestion (flatulence and dyspepsia)
Poor absorption
Supports the liver
Tonic to digestive system, strengthens
Tonic to mucous membranes, sinusitis
Intestinal worms or parasites


Some history and facts
Gentian is named after Gentius, king of ancient Illyria (180-167 B.C.) who is thought \to have discovered the healing properties of this plant.
Great yellow gentian is perennial plant that can survive up to 50 years in the wild.
Great yellow gentian was used as antidote for poisoning during the Middle Ages.

It was also used as tonic and remedy for digestion disorders in animals during the 19th century.
It was used for brewing of beer before the introduction of hops and gentian wine was very popular during the 18th century. The wine was usually consumed before dinner to stimulate the appetite.Root of great yellow gentian is used for the preparation of herbal bitters and as flavouring agent for various liqueurs and soft drinks today.

Cautions Peptic ulcers- gastric and duodenal
